Abstract: The theory of discourse cohesion was first proposed by Halliday and Hasan in 1976. Since the theory was put forward, many studies have been carried out. Cohesive devices are also used in various fields. However, there are few studies on the application of cohesive devices in the field of business news. This study analyzes the recent Chinese and English business news of China-US trade friction based on the theory of discourse cohesion, aiming to know the differences of cohesive devices between English and Chinese reports. The research finds that the frequencies of cohesive devices are different between English and Chinese reports, and this is mainly because Chinese is an analytical language while English is a synthetic language. This paper provides some enlightenment for business news teaching and helps students to better understand business news and the structure of the text.
