Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects of hyperoxia and hyperoxia on the the growth and nutrition of lettuce. Methods Fifteen day old lettuce plants(Lactuca sativa L.four varieties)seedlings were transplanted and grown for 30 days under three levels of total atmospheric pressure(101,54 and30 kPa)and two levels of oxygen partial pressure(21 and 28 kPa).Results The growth of all lettuce plants in normal total pressure was not inhibited by Hyperioxia(28 kPa).But hyperoxia significantly inhibited the growth of lettuce plants by decreasing biomass, leaf area and the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid, minerals, ash and crude fat in hypobaria(54 kPa or 30 kPa).Under hypobaria conditions, hyperoxia caused the death of four lettuce plants.Total pressures(101,54 and 30 kPa)had no significant influence on the growth of all lettuce plants under the same normal oxygen partial pressure(21 kPa).Conclusion Hyperoxia(28 kPa)markedly inhibits the growth of four lettuce plants in hypobaria(54 kPa or 30 kPa).Varieties ① and ③ have a a higher biamasses than varieties ②and ④.
