Abstract: In the past years,there has been inadequate research on the function of foreign language teaching in fostering studentsthinking ability and thinking quality.As a consequence,the announcement of the new English curriculum standards,which ranks the thinking quality as one of the key competencies in English subject,has sparked hot debates on the way to develop it.In order to define some fundamental concepts about thinking quality,this essay expounds the relationship between education and thinking and language and thinking,demonstrates that English subject can develop thinking quality by examples taken from English teaching materials,and elucidates the way to develop this key competency in English courses.
