Abstract: The amorphous carbon -based thin films are prepared on surface of steel balls through tooling design and process coordination, the structure, adhesion between film and substrate, tribological properties and homogeneity,sur-face roughness, adhesiveness of film layer and carrying capacity of amorphous carbon -based thin films on surface of steel balls are studied. The results show that the thin films consist of columnar CrN layer and amorphous carbon -based thin film layer. The adhesion between film and substrate reaches to 58 N.The friction coefficient of thin films is de-creased by 80% when compared with filmless substrate, and the width of wear scar is reduced by 85%.The amorphous carbon -based thin films on surface of steel balls have good uniformity, and the nanoscale smooth surface morphology of materials is kept. The adhesive force between film and substrate reaches to HF1 level. The simulated operating condi-tion test shows that the steel balls after coating have good resistance to compression, and the application requirements are fully met.
