Abstract: An elastic ring squeeze film damper(ERSFD)used in the ball bearing rotor system of a high speed turbocharger was studied.Based on the finite element analysis(FEA)and oil film squeezing theory, the support rigidity of elastic ring, the pressure field distribution of oil film, the rigidity damping of oil film and the rotor dynamic characteristic of ball-bearing rotor system for ERSFD were analyzed and compared with the squeeze film damper(SFD).It was found that the cross rigidity and cross damping of ERSFD were very small, which could solve the coupling problem of SFD rigidity damping effectively so as to improve its nonlinear property obviously. The vibration of bearing housing on a ball bearing turbocharger with six convex stages ERSFD was measured on a test bench and compared with the rotor dynamics computation results.
