Abstract: Developing students’ key competency in English is an important strategy in deepening the English curriculum reform in basic education.After a thorough review of research on students’ key competency in school subjects,this paper elaborates studentskey competency in English as foreign language in the Chinese context.Suggestions on how to develop students’ key competency in English are provided where necessary.
