Abstract: Xinzhenzhi water reservoir in Badong county of Hubei province has a total bank length about 600 m long at the north side of the Changjiang River. The reservoir bank appears high steep and dip slope featured in weak rock mass, heavy weathering and poor stability. Severe reservoir bank reconstruction in this portion would occur while water impounding of the Three Gorges Reservoir. According to the characteristics of engineering geology at the bank slope, investigation of a regional environment and geological conditions has been made for analysis of the failure mode in the bank slope and calculation of the landslide stability by means of transfer coefficient( thrust transfer method),indicating that the primary reason deteriorating the stability of the band slope is water level changes.Even the bank slope is stable at present,it might be poor in stability because of water impounding in the reservoir which would cause severe reservoir bank reconstruction by hydrodynamic actions.
