Abstract: The electron-optical modulation transfer function ( MTF ) and root mean square ( RMS ) radius in the proximity focusing and sharp focusing systems for the photoelectronic image devices are studied in this paper, where the initial energy of photo electrons is supposed as having Cosine , Maxwell and βeta distributions .It has been proved that the formula expressed by the exponential function as T(f) = exp[-(πpf)2)is accurate enough to indicate the MTF of the image focusing systems, where p, the focusing error coefficient, will be confirmed as the RMS radius of image systems, so it has a definite physical meaning. Under consideratin of these three initial energy distributions of photoelctrons , the MTF and its RMS radius of the image systems are given. Finally, some practical examples on MTF calculations for image tubes are given for illustrative purposes.
