Abstract: Liquidity constraint, as a kind of credit constraint, is more serious in less developed areas where the development of the credit market is inadequate and the income level is low. Under the liquidity constraints, residents in less developed areas are more inclined to reduce the current consumption and increase savings. The paper uses panel data of five provinces in northwestern China for nearly 28 years, calculates the degree of urban residents in less developed areas who are subject to the liquidity constraints, analyzes that the reform of the housing system and the development of the consumption credit have been the main reasons for the increase of the liquidity constraints of the urban residents’ consumption in less developed areas since 1999. Finally, the paper puts forward suggestions on alleviating urban resident liquidity constraints in less developed areas and increasing the consumption level.
