Abstract: Natural organic matter (NOM)is ubiquitous in natural surface waters and has major effect on the water treatment during the nanofiltration (NF)process. The compositions and properties of NOM were introduced and its influences on the rejection and flux of NF were discussed. These influences of hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity of NOM,concentration polarization effect, electrostatic repulsion effect, the hydrogen bonding interaction and divalent ion chelating on nanofiltration were expunded. The effect mechanisms have important significance to improve the nanofiltration membrane performance.
