Abstract: In this paper the kinematically admissible velocity feild is determined by using a simplified metal flow pattern.Then the height of the deformation zone whice satisfies the minimum energy principle is obtained and a general formula for calculating the strain force in cold back-extrusion of various kinds of box-shaped products(of a rectangle,ellipse, square or circle) is derived through numerical calculation of direct optimization. The effects of different factors on the height of deformation zone and the strain force are analyzed. The results show that the strain force calculated by the formula given in this paper is very close to the experimental value.
