Abstract: In this paper, the theoretical formulae of primary arm spacing z_1 and the initial secondary arm spacing z_(20) were proposed with the consideration of the effect of direct electric field. To verify the formulae the experiments were carried out for Sn—12wt%Bi alloy under the unidirectional solidification condition. The experimental value exhibits the same tendency as the theory value. But for z_1 the fomer are a little smaller than the latter; for z_(20), the former are a little bigger than the latter. The reason for this is that the selected physical property values of the alloy are not precise.
