Abstract: Average length of stay (ALOS) has grown into a key indicator for efficiency and quality of care of hospitals. This paper describes AEP and its widespread applications in hospitals of other countries. When used in retrospective studies, AEP van analyze and identify internal factors resulting in inappropriate days of stay from the point of organizational diagnosis, and identify problems existing in hospital flow design; resources configuration, patient payment, healthvare system, etc. This way hospitals can make improvements accordingly, so as to provide theoretic and practice guidance on how make healtheare resources more efficient, cut back the ALOS.
