Abstract: Objective To reduce the cesarean section rate and improve the natural birth rate and the quality of medical care. Methods The five steps,"define-measure-analyze-improve-control", in Six Sigma method was adopted to analyze the procedure of cesarean section as so to identify the main influencing factors of cesarean section rate and propose countermeasures. Results The main reasons for performing cesarean section include:request of the families, intrauterine fetal distress, hospitalization assessment, macrosomia, possibility of painless childbirth and the ability to observe the stage of labor. After improvement, the cesarean section rate was decreased from 41.8%to 32%, Z value was increased from 1.706 to 1.967 (P<0.001). The difference before and after the improvement was statistically significant. Conclusion Improvement of hospitalization assessment system, establishment of nutrition clinic, reduction of the incidence of macrosomia, implementation of midwife training and performance appraisal system, provision of painless childbirth are the effective ways to reduce cesarean section rate.
