Study on the Influence of Job Burnout on the Anxious or Depressive Symptoms of Psychiatric Nurses

Abstract: Objective To explore the difference of the influence of nurses' occupational stress and job burnout on their anxious or depressive symptoms between psychiatric specialized hospital and general hospital. Methods Conducted questionnaire survey on 110 nurses from specialized hospitals and 103 nurses from general hospitals with pressure source scale,Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), self-rating anxiety scale and self-rating depression Scale. Multiple hierarchical regression analysis was used to explore the influence of occupational stress on anxious or depressive symptoms and verified the mediating effects of job burnout between occupational stress and anxious or depressive symptoms.Results 1. For nurses in psychiatric specialized hospitals, job burnout played a complete mediator role in the influence of nursing profession and work, patient care, management and interpersonal relationship on depressive symptoms. Job burnout played an incomplete mediator role in the influence of work environment and resources on anxious symptoms while it was a complete mediator as with patient care. 2. For nurses in general hospitals, job burnout played an incomplete mediator role in the influence of nursing profession and work, patient care, management and interpersonal relationship on depressive symptoms. Job burnout played an incomplete mediator role in the influence of workload and time allocation on anxious symptoms. It is played a complete mediator role in the influence of management and interpersonal relationship on anxious symptoms.Conclusion Occupational stress and job burnout were significantly associated with anxious or depressive symptoms. Job burnout plays a mediator role in the influence of occupational stress on anxious or depressive symptoms.
