Sealing Performance Analysis of O-ring with Surface Defects

Abstract: The rubber O-ring seals with surface defects are analyzed in different sealing gaps and oil pressure with program ABAQUS. The distributions of the Von Mises and the sealing surface contact stresses are discussed, after analyzing the deformation and stress, a compari-son is made with it in ideal surface condition. The results indicate that the max contact stresses of the O-ring seals with surface defects(mis-placement, notch, flash)exceed the medium pressure in different sealing gaps and oil pressure and it is guaranteed to seal absolutely. But the max Von Mises exceeding it in ideal surface condition shows that the phenomenon of stress relaxation with a defect will be more obvious and easier to crack. And during the three kinds of surface defects, the Von Mises of O-ring seals with flash defect is higher than the other two kinds .
