Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of specialist nursing on cognitive function and life quality of patients with Alzheimer. Methods In total 78 eligible patients with Alzheimer who received treatment in our hospital from June 2013 to June 2014 were included in our study. We divided them into two groups randomly, specialist nursing group and routine nursing group. Patients in both groups received dietary nursing, environmental nursing, rehabilitation guidance, and safety nursing. Additionally, patients in specialist nursing group received intensive training of cognitive function. Patients' cognitive function status in both groups were tested with Mini-Mental Sate Examination (MMSE) and Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL) before and after the treatment. Results In specialist nursing group, the MMSE scores of patients before and after the treatment were 17.3±3.5 and 23.3±5.6 respectively and the ADL scores were 27.6±5.6 and 16.8±2.4 respectively. The differences of results before and after treatment were statistically significant (P<0.05); In routine nursing group, the MMSE scores of patients before and after the treatment were 17.5±3.6 and 20.8±4.2 respectively and the ADL scores were 27.1±5.2 and 21.5±4.5 respectively. The differences of results before and after treatment were statistically significant (P<0.05); There was no difference of MMSE scores and ADL scores between the two groups before the treatment (P>0.05). After the treatment, the MMSE scores of specialist nursing group was significantly higher than that of routine nursing group (P<0.05) and the ADL scores of specialist nursing group was significantly lower than that of routine nursing group (P<0.05).Conclusion Patients with Alzheimer who received not only routine nursing but also specialist nursing can have better cognitive function and life quality.
