Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of continuing nursing care on improving the life quality of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) after discharge from hospital. Methods From January to December 2013, 82 patients with COPD were treated in our hospital. We divided them into observation group and control group with 41 cases in each group. Patients in control group received usual care such as respiratory stimulant, continuous low-flow oxygen therapy, airway maintenance, anti-infection, transfusion and nutritional support. Patients in observation group received not only usual care as control group but also continuing nursing care after discharge from hospital. After one year, the cold times, hospitalization times and blood routine index of patients in observation group and control group were compared. The life quality of patients after discharge was assessed with the Quality of Life scale (QOL) and the pulmonary function indexes of patients after discharge were also evaluated. Results The situation of cold times, hospitalization times and blood routine index of patients in observation group were significantly better than that of patients in control group according to the one year follow-up(P<0.05);Indexes of arterial blood gas analysis and pulmonary function in observation group were significantly better than control group (P<0.05);The life quality indexes such as daily life ability, social life ability, mental depression and anxiety symptoms in observation group were significantly better than that of control group (P<0.05). Conclusion Continuing nursing care for patients with COPD after discharge from hospital can significantly improve the pulmonary function, delay disease progression and improve the life quality of patients.
