Abstract: Objective To investigate the process design and application of barcode in routine pathological specimens management in the operating room.Methods During April-December, 2013, totally 15,723 conventional surgical pathology specimens were orderly managemented using barcode technology, the process design and application of specimens obtaining, identification, transmission, analysis, quality feedback were completed.Results The application of barcode technology achieved the electronic submission process of surgical pathology specimens and systematic quality management of samples, labels and pathological sheet, regulated samples treatment process, and further improved the safety of surgical pathology specimen management. Conclusion Applications of barcode technology achieved monitor and control of surgical pathology specimens in the whole process. No accident occurred to any case. The time for censorship was cut down by 25 minutes compared with conventional inspection. Cross-infection was reduced and communication and coordination among Department of Pathology, Department of Surgery and other department was strengthened. The quality, efficiency and service have gained a significant improvement. All that mentioned shows barcode management is a very effective management tool.
