Abstract: Objective To investigate the effect of comprehensive nursing interventions on psychological status of the patients in the surgical waiting area. Methods 200 patients who received epidural anesthesia were randomized devided into two groups from April 2014 to August 2014 in our hospital, according to the method of random number table. 100 patients in the control group received routine nursing care and missionary while patients in experimental group received additional comprehensive care interventions after entering the surgical waiting area. Parameters of psychological status including Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), ventricular rate, mean arterial pressure, the concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the peripheral blood were compared between two groups in four different periods (in the ward, in the surgical waiting area, in the operation room, post-operation). Results No significant difference was found when the patients in the ward, however there were statistical differences between two groups in the other periods respectively regarding parameters of psychological status. The parameters in the experimental group including SAS score, ventricular rate, mean arterial pressure, the concentration of adrenaline and noradrenaline in the peripheral blood were statistically lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions Comprehensive care interventions for the patients in the surgical waiting area can reduce anxiety and psychological stress of the patients effectively, and can enhance patient safety and postoperative rehabilitation as well. It is strongly recommended to be popularized and applied in the operation room as comprehensive care interventions can achieve further improvement in nursing quality.
