Abstract: Objective To discuss the effect of Case Management (CM) on the postoperative rehabilitation of elderly patients with gastrointestinal surgery. Methods Totally, 120 elderly patients with gastrointestinal surgery were randomly assigned to experiment and control groups. Patients received CM in experiment group and postoperative routine nursing in control group. The recovery index and anxiety incidence were compared for the two groups. Result The number of patients who ambulated in the first 24 hours after the surgery, the time when the first ambulation occurred and its distance, the time when the first anus exhaust and defecation recover and the average length of stay in the experiment group were better than the control group and the difference was significant(P<0.05). The incidences of anxiety at 12th, 24th and 72nd hours after the surgery were significantly lower in experiment group (P<0.05). Conclusion The CM is contributing to the postoperative rehabilitation for elderly patients with gastrointestinal surgery and reducing the length of stay and incidence of anxiety.
