Abstract: 从明代中叶开始,江南士人在一定程度上确立起"超然"的意识,开始摆脱对政治权力的迷信和依附.士子们多数不太认真研习儒家经典,全身心地去奔仕途,而以文采风流、能诗词书画为习尚,以结社携妓交游为盛事.究其原因,主要是与商品经济的繁荣和工商业的发展、市民阶级的兴起密切相关.晚明的江南商人文化与才子、才女文化有不解之缘.商人文化对士人文化、青楼文化产生了极大的推动作用.万历年间娼妓遍天下,扬州、苏州、盛泽、松江、杭州等城镇妓馆林立,南京之秦淮最为繁盛,在秦淮青楼中深藏着许多才女,一般人称之为"名妓",这些名妓的共同特征是才、色、艺三绝,卓而不群,精通琴棋书画,文学艺术造诣不让于须眉,做人上有侠肝义胆,见识过人,在明清易鼎之际,关心国家命运,崇尚气节,大义凛然.秦淮名妓生逢晚明朝代更替、社会巨变、天崩地解的所谓乱世,乱世出英雄也出美人.他们的命运绝大多数是悲剧式的,当时秦淮名妓的命运多半与江南名士的命运连结在一起,其代表人物为李香君、卞玉京、董小宛.
