Abstract: AIM: To observe the nerve regeneration after acellular allografting in canines.METHODS: Fifteen canines were divided into acellular nerve allografting group(ANG, 6 canines), autografting group(AG, 6 canines) and fresh nerveallografting group(FNG, 3 canines). The sciatic nerves on the right side of all animals were exposed and a 5.0 cm-long segment in the mid-thigh level were removed and replaced by the three types of grafts. The nerve regeneration was observed by morphological study at 6 months after operations.RESULTS: There were many newborn nerve fibers, newborn vessels and Schwann cells in the transplanted segment. There were many myelinated nerve fibers in tibial nerve at the distal end. The quantity, shape and distribution of motor endplate in the target muscle were good. The results of ANG and AG groups were similar.CONCLUSION: Chemical acellular nerve, as an allograft, would not be rejected and absorbed by the host in the restoration of thick and long-segmental nerve defect in canines, of which the nerve regeneration had no significant difference compared with that of nerve autografting.
