Comparison of Suitability of Five Scales in Measuring Subjective Mental Workload during Flight Activities

Abstract: Objective To screen out the most suitable scale for measuring subjective mental workload of flight activities and compare the suitability of five scales in measuring subjective mental workload during flight activities.Methods Twenty-seven pilots participated in a traffic pattern training and were asked to fill in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration-task load index(NASA-TLX)scale,subjective workload assessment technique(SWAT)scale,modified Cooper-Harper(MCH)scale,workload profile(WP)scale and multiple resource questionnaire(MRQ)respectively after training according to their actual experience in the stages of take-off,cruise and landing during the flight.The sensitivity,diagnosticity and acceptability of the five scales in measuring subjective mental workload during different flight stages were compared and analyzed.Results In terms of sensitivity,NASA-TLX scale was the highest,followed by WP scale,and MRQ scale was the lowest.In terms of diagnosticity,NASA-TLX scale had advantages in the classification diagnosis of mental workload,while WP scale had advantages in the diagnosis of the consumption of mental resources.The MRQ scale had poor acceptability,which was reflected in the long time to fill in and the difficulty to understand.Conclusion Because of the better sensitivity and diagnosticity,the NASA-TLX scale can be the first choice to measure subjective mental workload during flight activities.The WP scale can diagnose mental workload from the consumption of mental resources in information processing,so it can be combined with the NASA-TLX scale to measure subjective mental workload during flight activities.
