Abstract: The five-colored auspicious omens and inauspicious omens referred to those various particular natural things and phenomena that were given the implications of good and bad lucks. They were frequently applied to interpret or predict social and political phenomena. Even though these two categories of political cultural symbols were opposite to each other in their implications, they reflected the speculative idea of traditional monarchical power that integrated both the absoluteness and relativeness of monarchy. Confucianism had taken advantage of the discourse power of the five-colored auspicious and inauspicious omens to impose much influence on the monarchical institution and thought. The re-examination on the five-colored auspicious and inauspicious omens since Tang Dynasty revealed the consolidation of Confucianism political and cultural power. The"weakening"of the symbolic relationship between the five-colored auspicious and inauspicious omens and the political affairs, the"strengthening"of the objectivity of defining criteria and the"diversification"of positions revealed various evolution tendencies such as the diminishment of divination in traditional monarchy, the increase of moralization and so on.
