Abstract: In November 2017, CMA CGM, a French container transportation and shipping company, announced that their nine large-scale(22,000 TEU) containerships would be dedicated to running on LNG. These containerships would be delivered by China State Shipbuilding Corporation. This article reviews the current status of LNG as a marine fuel, and analyzes the influence which the order would have on global LNG market in the shipping sector. While these are the first ships to run on LNG, the size of the vessels and the associated fuel consumption will add confidence in that this new LNG demand sector has a bright future. The order will boost bunkering infrastructure, provide new ideas in the development of LNG as a marine fuel. Meanwhile it will also provide positive influences on improving the level of shipbuilding as well as accelerating the development of LNG as a marine fuel in China.
