Abstract: The competitiveness of naphtha to ethylene has close relation to oil price. Oil price slump after 2014 makes naphtha to ethylene resume its competitiveness. Mainly through analysis on the status, cost and development trends of ethylene industry at home and abroad, this paper emphatically expounds on the economics of ethylene feedstocks such as light hydrocarbons, naphtha, coal and methanol, and holds that global ethylene supply will remain relatively tight in future, and oil price hovering at low level will play a vital role in improving the competitiveness of naphtha to olefins. In future, with the commissioning of domestic newly built naphtha to ethylene units, domestic ethylene self-sufficiency will be enhanced. It also suggests that we should optimize the layout of domestic ethylene industry, take full advantage of local feedstocks, and realize coordinated development of oil to olefins and MTO. With the commissioning of new naphtha to ethylene capacities in China, its ethylene self-sufficiency rate will increase.
