Abstract: Many of Zhou Zuoren’s prose after 1949 are"short"essays that are"irrelevant to the subjects", and tend to be more"tranquillity of mind"in terms of style, which dilutes emotions and generates a special kind of"distance"that is so far and so near, and so intimating and alienating. It suits the prose of"reminiscences". This"distance"is a very unique feature for Chinese literature in 1950 s-1970 s. This paper tries to analyze the reason behind it. Zhou Zuoren’s efforts are probably hard to say successful, but the pessimistic and doubtful mentalities and"reminiscences"of the life and death dilemma, make Zhou’s writing unique in Chinese literature of 1950 s-1970 s.
