Effect of beta-cypermethrin on blood SOD, GSH activity and MDA content in rats

Abstract: [Objective] To detect the effect of beta-cypermethrin on activities of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD),Glutathione peroxdase (GSH-Px) and content of Maleic Dialdehyde (MDA) in blood of rats,explore its possible toxic mechanism.[Methods] Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups,including beta-cypermethrin low dose group,middle dose group,high dose group and control group.The rats were treated by gavage for 30 days,and the general condition and body weight changes were observed.At the end of experiment,the blood samples were collected from abdominal aorta,to detect the activities of SOD and GSH-Px and content of MDA.The brain,liver,kidney,spleen and testis tissues were weighed to calculate the organ coefficients,and some tissues were fixed in 10% formalin to conduct the histopathological examination.[Results] Beta-cypermethrin caused weight loss in rats.The weight of animals in high dose group,middle dose group,low dose group and control grouP were respectively (281.43±15.87 g),(295.55±14.60 g),(304.81±14.78 g) and (315.29±17.62 g),and the differences were statistically significant between exposure groups and control group (P<0.05).The brain-to-body mass ratio and testicular-to-body ratio increased,those in high dose group,middle dose group,low dose group and control group were respectively (0.47±0.03,1.17±0.14),(0.46±0.03,1.20±0.11),(0.45±0.02,1.12±0.07) and (0.43±0.03,1.08±0.11),and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).With the increase of exposure dose,the activities of SOD and GSH-Px in serum decreased gradually,those in high dose group,middle dose group,low dose group and control group were respectively (34.57±1.83 U/ml,880.83±55.73 μmol/L),(43.69±1.83 U/ml,1 014.18± 41.69 μmol/L),(54.42±1.82 U/ml,1 129.72±31.17 μmol/L) and (65.46±1.53 U/ml,1 177.62±54.89 μmol/L),while MDA content graduallyincreased,that in high dose group,middle dose group,low dose group and control group was respectively (6.35±0.45 nmol/ml),(4.92±0.35 nmol/ml),(3.67±0.43 nmol/ml) and (2.40±0.57 nmol/ml),and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).[Conclusion]Oxida-tive injury may be one of the mechanisms of toxic action of beta-cypermethrin.
