Survey on current situation of health literacy among primary school teachers in Nanjing City

Abstract: [Objective] To realize the level of health literacy among primary school teachers and in Nanjing City,understand the present situation of school health education,and provide the basic data and policy recommendations for health promotion strategies of schools.[Methods] Using multi-stage stratified random cluster sampling method,528 teachers from 12 primary schools in Nanjing City were investigated with the questionnaire of health literacy.[Results] The overall level of health literacy among primary school teachers and in Nanjing City was 44.3%.The proportion of teachers had the health literacy of basic health concept and knowledge,healthy lifestyle and behaviors,and health related skills was 28.6%,53.0% and 50.0%,respectively.Among 5 categories of health problems,the rate of basic medical care and chronic non-communicable diseases prevention was 24.6% and 24.2% respectively.The differences in health literacy level were statistically significant among teachers in different groups of school,age,education level,school age,teaching subject,and head teacher (all P<0.05).79.9% of the surveyed schools offered health education cause.[Conclusion] The overall health literacy level among primary school teachers in Nanjing City is not satisfactory.As the occupational group with social demonstration function,it is necessary and urgent to improve the health literacy level of primary school teachers.
