Physical examination results of patients with severe mental illness in a community of Shanghai

Abstract: [Objective] To explore the current physical condition of registered patients with severe mental illness in Zhujing Town of Jinshan District of Shanghai,early detect the patients' somatic diseases,understand the impact of anti-psychotic drugs to patients,and take timely and appropriate treatment and control measures.[Methods] The physical examination was performed in registered patients with severe mental illness in this community,to analyze their physical conditions.[Results] Totally 484 patients received the free medical examination,including 236 (48.76%) males and 248 (51.24%) females.The abnormal rate of fasting blood glucose,blood pressure,triglycerides,total cholesterol,alanine aminotransferase and electrocardiogram was respectively 27.07%,38.22%,17.15%,30.79%,28.10% and 26.65%,and the obesity rate was 12.19%.The abnormal rate of blood pressure in patients over 60 years old was the highest,which was 47.45%.The obesity rate in patients below 45 years old was the highest,which was 18.38%.The abnormal rate of triglycerides and total cholesterol in patients aged 45-60 years old was the highest,which was 21.05% and 36.84% respectively.The obesity rate in patients without medication (35.29%) was s higher than that in patients treated with drugs (x2=6.69,P<0.05),and the abnormal rate of blood pressure in those were treated with drugs over 30 years was the highest (47.06%).[Conclusion] The abnormal rates of fasting blood glucose and blood pressure in patients with severe mental illness are higher than those in the normal population.It is necessary to strengthen publicity about diabetes and hypertension prevention knowledge among those families have patients with severe mental illness,and control patients' weight properly.
