Abstract: Pigment epithelium-derived factor is a member of super family of serine protease inhibitors with anti-inflammatory,antioxidative,anti-angiogenic,neurotrophic and neuroprotective properties.Recently, more and more studies showed that PEDF is closely associated with diabetic nephropathy (DN).PEDF inhibits the expression of proinflammatory factors, including intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1),monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1),Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α),interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),suggesting it has anti-inflammatory effect. Moreover,PEDF could also promote endothelial cell apoptosis and prevent renal fibrosis which plays a pivotal protective role in diabetic nephropathy (DN).Therefore,PEDF may be a promising choice for the treatment of DN.
