Abstract: A semigroup S is called strongly retractable, if each of its subsemigroups is a retract of S. In this paper, strongly retractable groups, strongly retractable completely simple semigroups, strongly retractable semilattices and strongly retractable regular semigroups are successively characterized and finally a structure theorem for general strongly retractable semigroups is given.
