Isolation and identification of Brachyspira hyodysenteria and pathological examination of swine dysentery

Abstract: In order to diagnose the case of suspected swine dysentery in a pig farm, the clinical samples were collected from the affected pig for bacteria isolation and identification. Then a predominant bacteria with p-hemolysis was isolated in TSA blood agar through anaerobically culturing at 37 ℃ for 5 days. The bacterium was identified as Brachyspira hyodysenteria by Wright Giemsa staining, morphological examination by scanning electron microscope and PCR detecting. Histopathological examination showed that severe inflammation, excessive mucus production, vascular congestion, hemorrhage and necrosis were found in the colon. histopathological examination displayed bonding loose among epithelial cells, collagen fiber dissolution and fracture in the small intestine. The results indicated that the pigs were infected with Brachyspira hyodysenteria and the mucosa of colon and cecum of infected pigs were damaged seriously.
