Export Sales Lacquer Tea Caddies in the Qing Dynasty

Abstract: The article studies the origin, development and social value of lacquer tea caddies for export sales in the process of Chinese and western culture commu-nication from 18th to 19th century, and ilustrates gifts exchanging in trade is an important way of culture communication. There are two periods in the process of genera-tion and development of lacquer tea caddies shape. The ifrst one is tea tins with locks and tea caddies in various materials. Tea caddies’ form show the same at the sec-ond period, usualy with golden patterns on black lacquer, which is Chinese redesign according to understanding of western culture from trading. What’s more, the latter one is the bridge between Chinese and western culture and also the history witness of the bulk tea trade in Chinese and western trade period.
