Abstract: Based on the data from 2006 to 2015 of surface water environmental quality monitoring network in China, chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen variation characteristic of Huaihe River Basin is analyzed in recent ten years. The quality of the main stream was better than the main tributaries and Yishusi river system. As for Huaihe river system, the annual mean value of chemical oxygen demand fluctuated in recent ten years, but the annual mean value of ammonia nitrogen significantly decreased. The annual mean value of chemical oxygen de-mand and ammonia nitrogen of Yishusi river system also significantly decreased. The concentration of chemical oxygen demand wasn't affected by season. The concentration of ammonia nitrogen was higher in drought season than in wet season. The decrease of pollutant emission was the important reason for the improvement of surface water quality in the Huaihe River Basin in recent ten years.
