Abstract: The behavior of dual-anode electron gun for Ka-band space travelling wave tube( TWT) was mathematically modeled, theoretically analyzed, experimentally measured with the lab-built Electron Beam Analyzer, and numerically simulated with the newly-developed software package Microwave Tube Simulator Suite( MTSS),to optimize the performance of the TWT ’s electron optics. The influenceof the voltage of the beam forming electrode( BFE) and heating power on the electron gun’s properties, including but not limited to the perveance, radial distribution of current density, emittance, electron trajectories and beam-waist radius, was systematically investigated. The experimental data, measured with the novel electron beam analyzer and evaluated in the electron gun fabrication, respectively, were found to be in good agreement with the simulated results. We suggest that the diagnosis of electron gun properties with the newly-developed electron beam analyzer be of much technological interest in design optimization of electron optics in TWT.
