Simulation of Magnetic Field Distributions in Novel Cup-Shaped Axial/Transversal Magnetic Field Contacts of Vacuum Circuit Breaker

Abstract: The magnetic field distributions,in the newly-developed arc extinguishing gap consisting of the hybrid cup-shaped transverse / axial magnetic field( TMF / AMF) contacts of the high voltage DC vacuum circuit breaker,were mathematically modeled and numerically simulated in finite element method. The simulated results show that in a steady magnetic field,the transversal magnetic field in the mid-gap plane increases,accompanied by a significantly enhancement of the axial magnetic field in the central region,possibly because of the superposition of the strong transversal magnetic field components of both AMF and TMF contacts. However,when it comes to the diffusion of metal vapor and dissipation of arc energy,the novel cup-shaped TMF / AMF contacts outperforms the conventional cup-shaped contacts because of the much weaker residual magnetic field.
