Abstract: The latest progress in detection and identification of old latent fingerprints, left on non-porous and semi-porous substrates, were tentatively reviewed. The discussions focused on: i) the possible mechanisms responsible for forensic detection of latent finger-prints with metal thin films, synthesized on contaminated non-porous and semi-porous substrates, including but not limited to paper, plastics, polymer / cotton textures, ceramics, and ferrous magnetics; ii) the impact of the detection conditions, such as the contaminations, substrate material, quality and exposure time of finger-prints,type of metal and / or metal oxide coatings, and sample preparation techniques,on the possibility and sensitivity of latent finger-print detection; and iii) preliminary results reported in literature. In addition, the development trends, existing technical problems and possible solutionsof the latent finger-printer detection with metal films were also briefly discussedin a though provoking way.
