Abstract: This study selected the Gongguoqiao and Xiaowan reservoirs along the middle and lower reaches of the Lancang River. This work presented the spatial and temporal distributions of heavy metal, and assessed heavy metals pollution degree of two hydropower reservoirs. Results show that:(1) the contents of heavy metal elements are obviously affected by seasons; contents of heavy metal elements in the rainy season are significantly high; Heavy metal elements are accumulated higher in November after the flood season; Damming the sand sediment has obvious interception effect on heavy metal pollution in the upstream and downstream.(2) Results of the geoaccumulation index show that heavy metals do not present pollution state in March and June; but Pb, Mn, As and Zn of Gongguoqiao reservoir show contamination state in sediment and suspended sediment in August and November, pollutions of Cu and Hg did not occur in these two months, the contamination degree of Gongguoqiao is generally greater than that in Xiaowan, and heavy metal pollution often occurs in the rainy season;(3) According to the view of whole year, potential ecological risk index(RI) of 7 heavy metals were less than 150, the potential ecological risk degree were slight; the potential ecological risk degree of 7 heavy metals are from severe to light, followed by Cd, As, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn. This study reveals the distribution status and the pollution degree of heavy metals in the downstream of mining area, and to provide the scientific references for the reservoir and watershed environmental management.
