Analysis on microstructure and mechanical properties of pulsed TIG welded joint in TA15 titanium alloy

Abstract: This paper dealed with the microstructure and properties of pulsed TIG welded TA15 titanium alloy. The testing results showed that the microstructure of the welded zone was small and homogenous α and fine transformedβ, the heat affected zone was equiaxed β grain, and the base metal was fine lamellar widmanstattern microstructure.The mean tensile strength of welded joints was about 900 MPa, a little lower than base metal. SEM fracture appearance showed that welded joint had tenacity character. The mean hardness of weld zone was HV226 and HAZ was HV392. The hardness distribution in the fusion zone had a great gradient. The gradient in base metal was very small and the average value was HV403.
