On-line detection methods of docking flat-fell seam gap characteristics in friction stir welding

Abstract: In order to meet the requirements of on-line weld seam characteristic extraction and tracking, which was applied to aerospace products for friction stir welding, a new method of weld seam gap measurement based on laser triangulation technique was proposed. The characteristic geometric size including the position of weld seam edge and weld seam gap( less than 0.2 mm) could be measured automatically, rapidly and precisely with this method. The measuring principle and process were introduced and the key image processing algorithms including region of interest extraction, laser stripe contour extraction, subpixel-precise laser stripe center extraction, characteristic size extraction, etc. were all presented in detail. This method had been verified by combining five-axis machining center and self-made measurement system, which could meet the requirements of engineering application.
