Abstract: Objective To precisely create a finite element model(FEM)of human temporomandibular joint(TMJ)under maximum mouth opening. Methods Data of CBCT and MRI images from a same male adult volunteer with maximum mouth opening were collected,the CT image data of cortical bone and the MRI image data of cancellous bone were extracted and introduced into Mimics software to create three-dimensional models of mandible,articular fossa of temporal bone,and TMJ disk.The established three-dimensional models were assembled using Mimics,Geomagic studio and Pro/E software to form a complete structure of TMJ,and,finally,the acquired model data were introduced into Hypermesh 12.0software for mesh generation and local optimization,and thus to create a finite element model of TMJ. Results An accurate 3DTMJ finite element model was established.Conclusion The creation of maximum-mouth-opening-position finite element model of temporomandibular joint is of important significance for further study of its biomechanics and the origin of temporomandibular joint disorder.
