Relationship between macro and micro-structure and tensile strength of PAN-based carbon ifbers

Abstract: The macro and micro-structure of T300, SY300 carbon fibers commercially available and T700, SY700 prepared in our laboratory were characterized and studied by using scanning electron microscopy, laser Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray small angle scattering. The differences of 4 carbon fibers be-tween the macro and micro-structure were compared and the influence on tensile strength were analyzed. The results showed that the tensile strength was inversely proportional to the diameter and its value was closely re-lated to the experimental methods of diameter in the macro. In micro, the tensile strength is proportional to the degree of graphitization and microcrystalline thickness, is inversely proportional to microcrystalline layer spac-ing and the pore size for different type of carbon fiber. For the same type of carbon fiber, data of the graphitiza-tion degree, microcrystalline thickness and layer spacing were very close, micropore size was the main factors influencing the tensile strength.
