Abstract: By using Best Track Data from Shanghai Typhoon Institute,all typhoons moving along the east coast of Taiwan Island were selected.By analyzing daily rainfall data of Taiwan's automatic weather stations,distribu-tion of mean precipitation and extreme precipitation under the influence of typhoons moving northward along the East Taiwan coast were disclosed,and precipitation characteristics were compared with that under the influence of other typhoons not moving along the east coast of the island.By analyzing typhoons'location,movement and surrounding environmental conditions and with the help of Best Track Data and NCEP's reanalysis data,four factors that might be responsible for typhoon's track along Taiwan's east coast were introduced.Results showed that only a few typhoons tracked northward along Taiwan's east coast,they might have some relationship to the movement of the subtropical high.Significant mean daily rainfall and extreme daily rainfall appeared eastward or northwestward of Central Mountain Range when Taiwan was hit by a typhoon moving along its east coast.If fac-tor criteria of location,direction,subtropical high and vorticity could be met at the same time,the typhoon could be moving along Taiwan's east coast.
