Experimental Study of Tantalum Rod Implantation in Treating Femoral Head Ischemic Necrosis of Canine Model

Abstract: Objective:To observe the effect of tantalum block combined with bone implantation in treating osteonecrosis of the femoral head(ONFH)in early and metaphase in order to provide experimental basis for the clinical application of tantalum in the treatment of ONFH.Methods:Eighteen canine models with femoral head necrosis were established by means of liquid nitrogen cryoinjury,and then were randomly and averagely divided into control group,tantalum rod group and tantalum block group.Control group carried out the procedure of incision,expose and suture.Tantalum rod group were implanted with tantalum rod,tantalum block group were implanted tantalum rod with the autocancellous bone in the tract.X-ray,MRI,CT examination were used to detect the general situation at the 4th,8th,12 th,and 24 thweek after the intervention.All animals were put to death at the 24 th week.Morphological structures of distal femur were observed by microscope after HE staining,and trabecular bone area ratio were detected through Motic Med 6digital medical image analysis system.Results:Compared with the control group,some canines of tantalum rod group and tantalum block group recovered to normal4 weeks after operation.Most canines tended to be normal as time went by and tantalum block group became much better.The radiographic results showed that implanted materail in tantalum rod group and tantalum block group were surrounded by bone ingrowth,and bone necrosis was improved.Only a few canines in tantalum block group and tantalum rod group showed early manifestation of ONFH half a year later.The results of histology showed that cartilage surface and bone trabecular structure were the best in tantalum rod group,medium in tantalum block group,and worst in model group.As for the trabecular density,normal group had the highest density,tantalum block group had the second highest density,tantalum rod group had the third highest density.Model group had the lowest density(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Conclusion:It’s a feasible,effective and safe way using tantalum block combined with bone implantation to treat ONFH canine model in the short term.It also provides reference for further clinical trials.
