Abstract: Elegance and popularity belong to culture. In the pre- Qin days,elegance and popularity are reflected in music; in the dynasties of two Hans,elegance and popularity are filled with political and educational meaning. In the period of Wei and Jin dynasties,elegance and popularity have got cultural meaning. A New Account of Tales of the World is the symbol of elegant culture. Elegance is the cultural pursuit of intellectuals. The philosophy of Zhuangzi promotes the opposition of elegance and popularity,a change from political meaning to cultural meaning,and thus elegance or popularity has become implicit evaluation system of Scholars.
