Research on Stability of Tunnel Surrounding Rocks at Different Stratigraphic Positions

Abstract: In order to study the stability of tunnel surrounding rocks through different stratigraphic positions, taking the construction of a tunnel in the eastern part of Qinghai as an example, this study using the three-dimensional finite element numerical calculation method simulates the regularity of the stability of surrounding rocks through the layers of loess, loess mixed with gravel, and gravel respectively. A comparative analysis of the stress and displacement fields in the three cases reveals that the deformation and stress of the tunnel through the sandy gravel stratum are far greater than those through the layer of loess and in the gravel layer there arises tensile stress at the arch top; the uplift at the tunnel bottom is greater than the settlement at the tunnel top, especially when the tunnel goes through the loess layer. Therefore, the tunnel should try to avoid crossing the sandy gravel stratum; the tunnel through the gravel layer and the loess layer should also take corresponding measures to avoid the destruction of surrounding rock.
