Improvement of Tribological Properties of Plasma-Sprayed Cr2O3 Coatings by Adding Diamond Powder

Abstract: Themechanical behavior of the Cr2O3 coatings,deposited by plasma spraying on substrate of stainless steel,was improved by adding diamond micro-powder to Cr2O3 powder. The influence of the content and grain-size of diamond powder on the microstructures and tribological properties of the Cr2O3 coatings was investigated with scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive spectroscopy and conventional mechanical tools. The results show that the addition of diamond powder significantly improved the microstructures,mechanical and tribological properties of the Cr2O3 coatings. For example,as the content of 10 μm diamond powder increased,the compactness,hardness and wear-resistance of the Cr2O3 coatings increased,but the friction coefficient and wear-rate decreased. Coated at a content of 10%10 μm diamond powder,the lowest friction coefficient and wear-rate were 0. 06 and 9 × 10- 16m3/ N·m,respectively.A slight abrasive wear and some material transfer were responsible for the wear mechanisms.
