Modeling and Measurement of Effective Thermal Conductivity of Vacuum Insulation Panels

Abstract: The effective thermal conductivity of the vacuum insulation panels( VIPs),involving the thermal conductivity of the porous core material,getter material,low pressure gases,air permeability of insulating membrane,and thermal radiation,was empirically approximated,mathematically modeled,theoretically analyzed,and experimentally evaluated. The influence of the realistic factors,including the type,porosity and thermal properties of the core material and pressure,on the thermal conductivity was investigated. The calculated results show that the porosity and pressure have a major impact on the effective thermal conductivity and lifetime of VIPS. The effective conductivity of the VIPs,fabricated with the core materials of the conventional foaming material,ultrafine glass fiber and gaseous silica particles,was measured. The calculated and measured results were found to be in good agreement. We suggest that newlydeveloped model for the effective thermal conductivity of VIPs may be of some technological interest.
